When to use it

Хэн нэгний хэлсэн үгийг өөрийн үгээр дамжуулах — цаг нэг шат өнгөрсөн рүү ухарна

Хэн нэгний шууд хэлсэн үгийг ("...") өөр хүнд дамжуулахдаа цагийг нэг шат ухрааж (backshift) хэлнэ.

Passing on what someone said
  • "I am ready." → He said that he was ready. — Тэр бэлэн байгаагаа хэлсэн.
  • "We need more spare parts." → They explained that they needed more spare parts. — Тэд илүү олон сэлбэг хэрэгтэй байгаагаа тайлбарласан.
  • "I received the invoice yesterday." → She said she had received the invoice the day before. — Тэр өмнөх өдөр нь нэхэмжлэхийг хүлээж авсан гэдгээ хэлсэн.

Хурал, албан мэдэгдлээр гарсан шийдвэр, мэдээг дамжуулахад хэрэглэнэ.

Passing on news & decisions
  • "The builders will finish the roof tomorrow." → The manager said that the builders would finish the roof the next day. — Менежер барилгачид дээврийг маргааш дуусгана гэж хэлсэн.
  • "Our teacher has left the school." → The student said that their teacher had left the school. — Сурагч багш нь сургуулиасаа гарсан гэж хэлсэн.
  • "We can save money with this plan." → The accountant said they could save money with that plan. — Нягтлан тэр төлөвлөгөөгөөр мөнгө хэмнэж чадна гэж хэлсэн.

Say-ийн араас хүн шууд орохгүй (said that...), харин tell-ийн араас хэнд хэлснийг заавал нэрлэнэ (told me that...).

Say vs. tell
  • He said that the power was off. — Тэр тог тасарсан гэж хэлсэн.
  • He told me that the power was off. — Тэр надад тог тасарсан гэж хэлсэн.
  • The director told the staff that the annual audit had started. — Захирал ажилтнуудад жилийн аудит эхэлснийг хэлсэн.

Say-ийн араас хүн шууд орохгүй — хүнийг нэрлэх бол told me гэнэ.

She said me that the server was down.

She told me that the server was down. — Тэр надад сервер ажиллахгүй байгаа гэж хэлсэн.

How to build it

Subject + said / told + person + (that) + цаг ухарсан үйл үг

Дамжуулагч үйл үг өнгөрсөн цагт (said, told) байвал хэлсэн үгийн цаг нэг шат ухарна. That-ийг ярианд хасаж болно.

Subject + said + (that) + Subject + past verbSubject + told + person + (that) + Subject + past verb
  • "I work from home." → He said that he worked from home. — Тэр гэрээсээ ажилладаг гэж хэлсэн.
  • "The children are sleeping." → She told us that the children were sleeping. — Тэр хүүхдүүд унтаж байгаа гэж бидэнд хэлсэн.
  • "We have finished the budget." → The director announced that they had finished the budget. — Захирал төсвөө боловсруулж дууссанаа зарласан.

Said өнгөрсөн цагт байгаа тул хэлсэн үгийн цаг нэг шат ухарна: is → was.

He said that he is tired.

He said that he was tired. — Тэр ядарсан гэж хэлсэн.

Цагаас гадна төлөөний үг (I → he/she) болон цагийн үгс (today → that day, tomorrow → the next day, yesterday → the day before) хамт өөрчлөгдөнө.
